The Day on the Trails

Let’s talk about the Serpent Trail 50k. Deceptive is probably the best word for it! It takes you through some of the most gorgeous sand paths, pine woods, and open heathlands across the South Downs National Park, but don’t let the flat-looking maps fool you. It hides over 1,200 meters of short, sharp climbs that keep your legs guessing the whole way.

The best part of the day was easily the community. The crowd was absolutely brilliant, the atmosphere was incredibly supportive, and the event was organized flawlessly. The volunteers at the aid stations deserve a medal of their own—cheering us on in the baking summer heat and keeping everyone moving with a smile. Massive kudos to the elite runners up at the very front who made flying across rolling sand hills look like a casual walk in the park!

My Strategy & The Tango Save

My plan from the starting horn was simple: rely on my watch to strictly enforce a low-intensity, heart-rate-capped aerobic strategy, banking energy for the final third. For the first 30 kilometres out of Petworth, I was absolutely cruising. I felt efficient, my heart rate was beautifully stable, and I was ticking off the milestones right on schedule.

Then, ultra-running reality knocked on the door. As the afternoon heat really started looping, my stomach decided it was completely done with standard, solid trail nutrition. I hit a massive digestive wall, and things went a bit sideways between kilometres 30 and 40.

Running heavily on an empty tank, the final 11 kilometers turned into a proper test of stubbornness. Arriving at the final rest stop running on fumes, I made a executive, tactical pivot: I ditched the solid food entirely and grabbed two cans of fizzy Tango (I honestly love to claim this was tactical, shere dumb luck that it was what was available which was ice cold!) . It turned out to be an absolute masterstroke. Because liquid sugar doesn’t require the stomach to do any heavy lifting, those 28 grams of simple carbs hit my system almost instantly. The heavy brain fog cleared (I stopped being miserable), the legs perked right back up, and I was able to bring it home strong into Petersfield.

Post-Race Learnings

Honestly, crossing that finish line after a tough mental battle felt fantastic. And I have to celebrate the biggest win of the day: finishing a brutal 51km summer trail race with absolutely zero blisters and zero chafing. That’s a true miracle!

My legs are recovering nicely, though my soleus muscles are definitely sending me some highly specific, centrally located feedback about all those fast downhill braking forces on the technical tracks. My biggest takeaway for the next block? When the summer heat strikes, leave the dense trail snacks in the vest after hour three and switch entirely to liquid carbs and thin gels.
